Dublin Farmers' Market: June 27th

One of the secrets, and pleasures, of cooking is to learn to correct something if it goes awry; and one of the lessons is to grin and bear it if it cannot be fixed.

Julia Child

Summer can officially begin... SWEET CORN is here!

There are dozens of ways to cook sweet corn, and most of us have our preferred method, but how about things you shouldn't do to corn? Here are three things you should not do when cooking sweet corn:
  • Don't add salt to the water. It only toughens the corn when it cooks.
  • Don't cool off hot corn by running under cold water. It will make the corn soggy.
  • Don't overcook or the kernels will get hard and the corn will loose some of its sweet flavor.
Visit the Dublin Farmers' Market for your first taste of summer!

Dublin Farmers' Market: June 13th

When a man's stomach is full it makes no difference whether he is rich or poor.

Euripides

Market season is in full swing! Here are five tips for getting the most from your farmers' market:

Bring your own bags and baskets. By bringing your own bags, you reduce waste at the market and in your own home.

Bring cash and small bills. By bringing cash and – specifically – small bills, you keep money in your farmer’s pocket and you make it easier for him to make change for the masses of folks who bring nothing but $20 bills from the nearby ATM.

Go early, but not too early. The best stuff goes fast. A farmer may only have a single flat of ripe, juicy blackberries or a couple of pounds of fresh green peas, so arrive early to make sure you get the best pick of the market’s high-demand, seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Ask questions. When you're at the Dublin Farmers' Market, you're talking with the person who grew the food, or one that works on the farm. Take the time to ask questions. What are your cows eating? Are your vegetables organic? Is your farm ever open to the public? Do you grow what you sell? Ask questions.

Know the crop calendar. If you want to eat in season, you need to respect the seasons. Part of the pleasure of shopping at your local market is developing an appreciation of fresh, local foods at the height of their natural season.

“The shared meal elevates eating from a mechanical process of fueling the body to a ritual of family and community, from the mere animal biology to an act of culture."
